Abstract:

Background: Neonatal danger signs contribute to the high mortality of neonates in developing countries. Delays in recognition of danger signs and the decision to seek care contribute to most neonatal deaths in Ethiopia. Therefore, the current study aimed to assess mothers’,knowledge and associated factors on neonatal danger signs in Nekemte town, Western Ethiopia. Methods: The current community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in Nekemte, Ethiopia, in March 2019. The sample included 727 mothers who had given birth within the past 12 months. A multistage sampling technique was utilized to recruit participants and data were collected using face-to-face interviews. The collected data were entered into EPI info (version 7. 2. 0. 1) and analyzed using SPSS (version 23). To evaluate the knowledge of neonatal danger signs, a median score was used as the cut-off point. Mothers who spontaneously mentioned at least five danger signs were considered to have good knowledge of neonatal danger signs. Bivariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to identify factors associated with knowledge of danger signs. Results: Of 727 participants, 707 mothers were interviewed, yielding a response rate of 98. 3%. The median age of the participants was 27 years, with an interquartile range of ±,5. The result of the study indicated that 55. 6% [95%CI (52. 1%-59. 3%)] of mothers had good knowledge of neonatal danger signs. The adds ratio of having good knowledge of neonatal danger signs were associated with being married [AOR=2. 87, 95%CI (1. 27, 6. 52)], mother’, s educational status of secondary level or higher [AOR= 1. 71, 95%CI (1. 03, 2. 84)], antenatal care visits of four and more [AOR=1. 58, 95%CI (1. 09, 2. 31)], and postnatal follow-up [AOR=2. 13, 95%CI (1. 39, 3. 27)]. Furthermore, delivery at health institutions [AOR=3. 11, 95%CI (1. 10, 8. 76)], access to TV [AOR=1. 58, 95%CI (1. 05, 2. 37)], and Internet use [AOR=2. 39, 95%CI (1. 52, 3. 77)] were also significantly associated with good knowledge. Conclusion: The proportion of mothers with good knowledge of neonatal danger signs was found to be low. Therefore, it is recommended to enhance counseling services during antenatal care and strengthen community-based health information dissemination efforts related to neonatal danger signs.

Abstract:

Background: Schizophrenia is one of the most important and disabling mental disorders in the world. Males and females are equally affected. Diagnosis is a very difficult problem in this disorder. Because the diagnostic systems such as ICD-IO and DSM-IV are mainly subjective, they are not valid and reliable. Essentially, in the future, we will need to more objective criteria in psychiatry especially in diagnosis of schizophrenia. Neurological soft signs are an example of these objective criteria. In this study we evaluated the prevalence of neurological soft signs in schizophrenic patients and compared it with the prevalence of these signs in other psychotic patients (except mood disorders with psychotic features) and normal subjects. Methods: We compared the neurological soft signs (sensory motor integration, motor. Coordination, consequent complex motor acts, primary reflexes, and eye movements) in 30 schizophrenic patients, 30 other psychotic patients (other than mood disorders with psychotic features) and 30 normal subjects. Diagnosis of schizophrenia and also other psychoses were based on DSM-IN criteria. Normal subjects have been selected form the staff of Roozbeh hospital randomly. Results: The difference between the means of motor coordination subscale of neurological soft signs in schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders (other than mood disorders with psychotic features) were significant (P value<0.04). There were no significant differences between the means of other subscales of neurological soft signs in two groups of patients. Conclusion: There are some disturbances of motor coordination subscale of neurological soft signs in patients with schizophrenia. It seems that, these disturbances are evidence of involvements of basal ganglia, motor cerebral cortex, and cerebellum. So it may be suggested that motor coordination as a marker can be used in differentiation between the schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders.

Abstract:

Aims: This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of digital pocketbooks and animated videos about the danger signs of pregnancy in women in the third trimester of pregnancy at the Kebon IX Health Center, Jambi City, Indonesia. Participants and Methods: This pre-experimental study used a two-group pre-test post-test design involving 120 women in their third trimester of pregnancy referring to the Kebon IX Health Center, Jambi City, Indonesia. The dependent variable was knowledge, while the independent variable was health education using animated videos and E-books about the danger signs of pregnancy. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS 16 by the Wilcoxon test. Findings: The pre-test knowledge level of most of the subjects in the animated video media group was at a good level (50%), and after the intervention (post-test), it increased to 100%. The pre-test knowledge level of most of the subjects in the E-book group was at a good level (66.7%), and after the intervention (post-test), it increased to 100%. There were differences in the level of knowledge of pregnant women before and after the intervention using animated videos and E-books (p-value <0.001). Conclusion: Animated videos and E-books can increase the knowledge of women in the third trimester of pregnancy about the danger signs of pregnancy.
